Lenders and Realtors and Insurance Agents, OH MY!

So, let me just say that the finding the home and placing the offer is the fun part.

The happy-crappy that comes after?

Not so much.

Don’t get me wrong, our Realtor is THE BEST.

I love the lady processing our loan.

And I had a ball on the phone with our new Insurance Agent (even though he is from Norman. And closed our call with “Boomer Sooner”. I politely reminded him that NE Oklahoma was Cowboy country, but I would forgive him for his choice of schools (this time)).

My phone rings CONSTANTLY.

The emails don’t stop.

I have signed away my first born, my favorite dog, and what was left of my mind (but, let’s be honest…. I’m not sure I had far to go in that department….)

But we are moving along.

NOW FOR MY PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCENT.

If you haven’t shopped for Home/Vehicle insurance in the last 3-5 years, I encourage you to do it now. We noticed this odd thing about our insurance 10 or 15 years ago... after about year 2, it would increase just a little every year, and then all the sudden we would go, “Why are we paying how much for insurance?!?!?”

And now adays, most loan companies require you to Escrow your Insurance; chances are if you are Escrowing your Insurance, your rates are raising significantly every year without you even realizing it.

We've typically been changing insurance companies every 4-5 years, and the savings are, quite frankly, UNREAL.

My husband actually made the comment a week or so ago that he had seen our insurance increase about 4-5 times over the last year. They were all kind of expected though.

Raise 1 - Daughter had an accident.

Raise 2 – Son turned 16 and got his drivers license.

Raise 3 – We added my mother-in-laws car to our policy after she passed

I mean, they were all justifiable increases.

EXCEPT….

When we started looking at the policy history, we realized our rate had TRIPLED over the course of just 3 years.

We had to obtain insurance for The Rock House anyway, so I told my husband, let’s just re-price everything and see if we can get a better deal.

After shopping around, I found out that a claim was never filed for my daughter's accident, because the other party didn’t have insurance. But you bet your butt they graciously raised our rates as though they had paid a claim.

Since my son has had a drivers license with no accident for over 12 months, he qualified for a safe driver discount, but they never gave it to us.

Not sure why our home insurance raised over $1,000 two years in a row…. But it did. (Without us realizing it, since our Home insurance is Escrowed... we just assumed it was a tax increase - Jenks is notorious for high taxes... but that's what we get for assuming....)

At the end of the day, I added another home to our policy and our premium is $1,000 less per year.

That's right... more coverage for less moo-lah. (Haha.... get it "moo"-lah. Little farm humor for ya. I crack myself up sometimes.)

And all it took was a few quick phone calls.

So… mark it on your calendar. Review your insurance every 4-5 years. And if you don't have to Escrow it, DON'T.
