Halloween Reflections

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

As a child, I was always fascinated by Halloween.

As an adult, it is one of my family's favorite holidays.

Growing up in Central Oklahoma, I never knew what the weather for Halloween would be. The weeks leading up to it would always feel unseasonably warm, and the day before (or god forbid, the day of) the weather would turn freezing and my mother would threaten "you'll catch your death of cold. NO WAY are you trick-or-treating this year."

I would beg and plead.

My mother would eventually relent...

As long as I wore the dreaded winter coat over my beloved Wicked Witch of the West costume.

And yes, I always ended up being the Wicked Witch.

Each year, I would beg to be Glenda, but somehow my mother would talk me into embracing the less "princess-y" side of my personality.

And I'll admit, I did revel in being the "bad girl" on Halloween.

We lived out in the sticks, but we would take the farm truck into town, lower the tailgate, and I would ride on the back hopping off at each house with a porch lite on to get a child's greatest prize....

Questionable candy.

Most people in our small town (population of about 200) just gave out candy.

But a couple....

Scared the be-jesus out of me when I was nine.

As an adult, I strived to be those "couple" of houses.

One of the greatest things about living in an HOA for the past 15 years has been the amount of kids that come to our house to trick or treat. While living in Jenks, we have greeted well over 300 Trick-or-Treaters each Halloween (and have gone thru a couple thousand dollars in candy).

About 8 years ago, we did an EPIC Haunted House with my daughter's Girl Scout troop that took neighbors thru our Dining Room, Kitchen, and Living Area for a small donation to the Food Bank (sadly, that kind of production takes a LOT of volunteers and we couldn't pull it off more than once).

Over 10 years later, we still get neighbors that say "You're our favorite house. I remember that year you did the Haunted House!!"

While we haven't done the Haunted House since, we still display a full custom made graveyard, coffin, and carved Pumpkins in our yard, complete with a fog machine and fun Halloween music.

During COVID we added a Guillotine Candy Chute; it was such a hit with the kids it has stayed even after the pandemic.

This year, Halloween was bittersweet.

This may be the last time I get to see the fun Hockey Uniforms. The crazy blow-up Dino who looks like a bobble-head as he runs down the street. Batman on a hoverboard. A kid dressed as "Wild Thing" from Major League (complete with the haircut.... that kids costume was EPIC). The full cast of The Wizard of Oz (my favorite movie)....

As I watched my husband take a video of what might be the final year of our beloved Halloween display, laughed with my daughter over shared adult beverages, and watched my son appreciate the decorations he has helped his dad put up each year....

I mused that THIS will be the thing I miss most about being in the Big City.

My family's shared love of Halloween, and the way it brings us together.

So, as the Trick-or-Treaters dwindled, I started drafting up ways to keep our yearly family tradition alive.

And I'm actually looking forward to sharing my family's traditions with our new community.

I hope they can accept us... (we are a little wacky).
