Gotta love technology.
And my husband (can’t forget about him).
The internet thing was a deal breaker.
I broke down in tears (remember my nightmare?)
OK… they weren’t REAL tears.
But I did pout.
Like, A LOT.
And I gave my husband the puppy dog eyes.
(There may or may not have been a lot of whining involved).
From the time we got home after the viewings until late Sunday night, my husband trolled the internet to see if he could make wireless internet work for us.
The issue is that we both work for larger companies that require us to VPN into work everyday.
For normal home use, satellite internet is great.
But on a VPN the latency in the signal (because it’s not a constant stream – it just “pings” the satellite every so often) will cause the VPN to drop.
(Don’t quote me here… I’m no IT person – that would be the hubsters. I’m just relaying what little bit I absorbed from him. And I’m sure he’ll tell me I’m using the wrong words. He’ll try to explain it, and I’ll just hear “Blah, blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah.)
Basically, you know how annoying it is when your calls or internet are dropped at home?
Imagine being in a meeting with your CEO and that happening.
Over. And Over. And Over.
Every few minutes.... Not good.
Unfortunately, it’s typical with most rural places in Oklahoma. My parents didn’t have high-speed internet on their farm until probably the last 5 years… and it’s still pretty slow.
After lots of research, my husband said he thought the service they had might actually work.
But we needed to test it to make sure.
The owners were gracious enough to let us come in on a weekday, jump on their internet, and give it a shot.
He tested.
I tested.
We both tried to break the darn thing, holding multiple Teams meetings with video at the same time.
Logging on to different portals.
Doing speed tests.
(OK, let’s be honest... I loved the place. I jumped on a Teams call, said “Can you hear me?”, and ran a couple of my daily reports. Sent an email. It worked. I wasn’t going to continue to poke holes in it.)
After about an hour, the hubs deemed the internet connection sufficient for us to continue working from home.
(Can you see me jumping for joy? Because I was. AND doing my happy dance. Complete with Spirit Fingers.)
We put in an offer that afternoon.
The formal offer went out the next day.
And less than a week after seeing the Rock House, we were officially under contract.
